The Goods: Scrooge (1970) – A Christmas Carol musical extravaganza

Dan and Brian watched four different musical adaptations of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and are ready to dive in deep. In addition to the Albert Finney-starring Scrooge, they break down Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, The Muppet Christmas Carol, and the one with Frasier from 2004. Join for their fantasy draft of the best songs, reviews of the highs and lows of each iteration, Dan’s dream casting of an imaginary 2021 musical adaptation, and tributes to Scrooge’s humanist, anti-capitalist spirit.

  1. You get a pass for posting a Christmas movie review after New Years, because I only got around to listening to it six months later.

I’ve seen Scrooge 1970 many times, starting in my youth, though it’s probably been 5 or 10 years since the last time. Speaking from that perspective, I frequently find myself singing or quoting from “I Like Life,” “Thank You Very Much,” and “Father Christmas,” to the point where I had to play the “I Like Life” clip for my kids so they’d know what I was talking about.

I love that “greatest emotional resonance” is used in the same sentence as “Mr. Magoo.”

The one Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come who terrified me as a child and gave me nightmares was Pete from Mickey’s Christmas Carol.

With all that Christmas stuff out of the way, I love a good fantasy draft, but if there’s no method of adjudicating a winner — and no trash talking about who drafted better — then it’s probably not the ideal framework for what is basically a review of which songs y’all liked best. Dan revs up by saying that he loves an opportunity to use some game theory, but does game theory apply in a game with no payouts?

  2. I can’t believe Colton is listening to our podcast. You should join us for an ep on the movie of your choice. Maybe Newsies?
