by supertramp

Dan [6:37 PM]:
My rule is one song per artist, so i can’t pick it every day
Maybe I’ll do a “songs that aren’t goodbye stranger week”
and rate each song based on how similar it is to Goodbye Stranger

Wow. I mean, wow.

First of all, why would you ever want to listen to a song about friends? The only songs that I admire are about strangers.

Second, “Thank You For Being a Friend” is an implicit “hello.” As the theme song to Golden Girls, it welcomes viewers and listeners.

This is unacceptable. The title of “Goodbye Stranger” alone clarifies that it’s a farewell. “Stranger” and “friend” are opposites!

You may as well call this song “Un-Goodbye Un-Stranger.” It’s bizarro Supertramp. Trampsuper. Weak-homeowner.

And yet, I have to give “Thank You For Being a Friend” credit for an uplifting chorus and some cool vocal lines. “Goodbye Stranger” has those! Both are compulsively listenable, affirming songs.

I rate “Thank You For Being a Friend”‘s similarity to “Goodbye Stranger”: ★★ out of ★★★★★.
