I’m pretty sure if I had been about 14 in 1982 when “I Melt With You” had been a hit, I would have considered it the greatest song of all time. And I appear to not be the only one with that disposition: search Spotify or YouTube and you’ll find dozens of unironic covers of this song by artists who grew up in the 80s.

This song manages to take the stereotypical synths and drum machines of early 80s pop and turn them into something really expressive. It finds resonance where songs of similar style often just droned and wallowed. Add that to a memorable tune and earnest romantic lyrics and end with a pop classic that has TPOFUTYUOIT.
