This Valentine’s Day I find myself in a joyful marriage with a lovely wife. And if that wasn’t enough, I have a second Valentine: my adorable, seven-month old daughter.
To counterbalance that, I am going to choose one of the saddest love songs of all time as my Song of the Day. I have complained in previous entries in this series about the stereotypical drum machines and synthesizers that make up early- and mid-80s pop. I often feel they just make the tracks feel listless and turgid.
But here is an example of those tools used masterfully, creating ebb and flow to the song’s tone, from broken down to intensely passionate.
Add in lyrics that take on an almost spiritual quality, and the end result is a break up song that’s gorgeous and moving and perfect. And if it feels timeless, it’s at least partially because Naked Eyes was covering a forgotten track from the early sixties, truly making it their own.
