Song of the Day: “Lollipop” by Mika

I don’t know if there is a name for this genre of music: Songs that are just flamboyantly happy and silly and horny (I suspect “glam” is not a bad starting point). Damn is Mika (at least his first two albums, the only I know) a lot of fun to listen to. It reminds me a little bit of the songs by Meat Loaf and Freddie Mercury I’ve listened to for as long as I can remember, but in a pop context. You get some R&B, some falsetto, some cheerleader-chant type of choruses, and plenty of other goodness slathered on.

“Grace Kelly” was the song that got some buzz and radio play, but it could have been any of htem. The average quality of hooks on those first two albums is outstanding. Essentially every one of the songs makes me smile. But I want to shout out one favorite I’ve found myself listening to fairly frequently for the better part of a decade now: “Lollipop.”

Egads, the chorus. Just writing the song’s title got it stuck in my head (“Suckin’ too hard on your lollipop / Oh, love’s gonna get you down.”) It’s a schoolyard earworm that lingers for hours thanks to its effective chorus, yet is tuneful enough that you don’t resent it. I also love the song’s background beat, which I later learned is called the “Diwali Riddim” While other Mika songs have richer compositions (I really love “Touches You”), nothing sticks in your brain quite like “Lollipop.”
