Song of the Day: “Everlasting Love” by Carl Carlton

My brother Brad is currently spending a year-long retreat in Colorado as part of seminary. As a result, I have been sending him a bunch of snail-mail letters. This week, I’m honoring seven songs that remind me of him. My reflections will be in epistolary form, and I’ll actually print them out and mail them.

Dear Brad,

I find it interesting to consider the overlapping personality traits of the five Stalcup brothers. It’s a huge Venn Diagram or matrix chart.

One trait that I think you and I have in common, perhaps more than Will or Patrick — Jeremy probably falls on our side — is that we both have an appreciation for culture that feels good regardless of its other artistic content.

We love harmless but happy content. Pleasntries. I’ve mentioned this in a previous letter when I discussed our newfound fondness of Hallmark movies… Always generically wholesome. Positivity is not just a trait; it’s a virtue.

I always think of you when I hear this song, not just because I remember you bumping it quite a bit a few years ago, but because it so elegantly makes me smile, cheesy though it may be.

Yours in positivity,

Dan
