Song of the Day: “Lady Blues” by Lucky Tapes

This week, Dan’s brother Will is a guest host for the Song of the Day (or この日の歌).

When you can’t understand the words, the voice just becomes another instrument.

Funky. Bouncy. Jazzy. Catchy. I could think of twenty adjectives to describe this song and none of them would do it justice. With a driving beat, a catchy horn melody, and a great vocal line, you’d be hard pressed to find a song that oozes as much fun as this one.

I think this song is a great song to use as an example of just how much a solid bass line can add to a piece of music. When you listen to this song I want you to focus on how funky the bass line is and how well it complements the melody. Pay special attention to how bare the song sounds when it strips out the bass line, and appreciate how much fuller the song sounds with that bumping bass line.

There’s so much to appreciate about this song that I recommend you stop reading what I’m writing here and instead go and listen to this fun little jazz-rock piece.

Just try and keep from rocking out when that trumpet solo hits.
