This week, I’ll be writing about songs featured in some of my favorite musical moments from some of my favorite TV shows. Be warned that I don’t shy away from spoilers.
Towards the early-middle of Community’s first season, just as the show as hitting its stride and starting to take creative risks, came this. It’s possibly my favorite scene of the whole series. I love how it ties together various scenes with tight audio and visual cues. And it gives everyone a moment of warm redemption.
Danny Pudi and, of course, Donald Glover are emotive singers that bring to life the heart-tugger. It’s been decades since I’ve seen An American Tail, but I can say with confidence that its “Somewhere Out There” is nowhere near as great as Community’s.
Downloaded the soundtrack version around the time of your first Community post, and it’s just not the same without Shirley’s dialog or Chang screaming AAAAAAHHH at the big moment.
My favorite moment of the scene might be when the camera cuts to Pierce, and he’s eating a sandwich for some reason, which of course reminds Shirley of his advice.
