One of the annual traditions I’ve picked up in the past few years is playing to “This Will Be Our Year” as the very first song of the year. I’m pleased to say that tradition has continued in 2018.
I mean, just listen to it. How can you feel pessimistic about the upcoming 365 days with this running through your head?
The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle from 1968 is a delight of an album, a pleasant and gently psychedelic ode to the Summer of Love. It’s the pinnacle of the “chamber pop”/”baroque pop” boom of the late ’60s which infused some classical music elements (including instrumentation, counter-point rhythms, and melancholic, worship-y vocal harmonies) into pop and rock. It’s definitely worth a listen if you never have.
Now that it’s 50 years old, its hippie connotation is irrelevant, which means that “This Will Be Our Year” is simply a luscious piece of audio optimism.
