This week, I’m going to share some cover songs that I like.
Game of Thrones has become such a massive sensation that you can name-drop “Daenerys” or “Tyrion” or “Jon Snow” in casual conversation and assume people will know what you’re talking about. It’s one of this generation’s great zeitgeists.
The show’s fantastic theme song has become iconic in its own right. Forecasting the epic scope and drama of the hour to come, the sweeping piece by Ramin Djawadi is a perfect fit for the show. And the tune is so good, I’ve been humming it basically nonstop for the past seven years.
A couple years ago, my brother sent me the above video of the band Swamp Donkeys performing their own arrangement of the song in New Orleans jazz style, in all its buoyant, polyphonic glory. Reimagining the drama of the original into a brassy climax, filled with solos and high energy. If you’d never heard the original, you could easily think that this was the primary context for the number.
