Song of the Day: “In the Still of the Nite” by Boyz II Men

This week, I’ll be writing about some a cappella songs I like. I’m sorry this week doesn’t have a catchy tagline like “Get Pitch Slapped.”

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a sucker for boy bands. (This shouldn’t be a surprise; I grew up in the early Max Martin era, have an ear for well-crafted pop, and was a deeply uncool child.)

However, Boyz II Men was a bit before my time. And, to be honest, some of the production on their songs sounds a little bit dated to me, which has made it difficult for me to really get into their discography. (“End of the Road” is undeniably great, though.)

That said it’s no surprise to me that I love all of their a cappella tracks. The harmonies are stunning, and “In the Still of Nite” in particular has one of those classic melodies that is timeless. No wonder it’s a standard.

    • I just saw this comment now, after having misspelled “a cappella” all week. D’oh. I think I’ve corrected all usages.

I think I’ve heard of DaVinci’s Notebook, and Wikipedia confirms my vague memory of them as a comedy band. I’ll have to give a listen.

    • Very nice. I’ve been thinking for awhile that Earn This needs a retrospective or overview of Homestar Runner. Although I somehow never got into it, I think it was a seminal piece of early internet comedy for people our age, and a gentle introduction to absurdism.
