For our summertime BeerCast, Mike, Colton, and Dan split judging duties three ways, each picking two beers to share with the others. (Colton’s one-year-old and Dan’s wife Katy join in on the fun, too.)

Highlights (or, perhaps, lowlights) include Mike’s embarrassing third beer and Dan’s prank before the fourth beer.

Here are the six beers we tasted, in order, from the brewers’ descriptions:

Starr Hill: Whiter Shade (White India Pale Ale) – Whiter Shade marries two bold beer styles: the Belgian Wit and the IPA. 2-row and wheat malt provide a soft base beer for intense fruity and spicy esters of the unique Belgian yeast strain while enhancing the strong hop aroma. Whiter Shade is a refreshing IPA to enjoy during the summer.

Duck RabbitAmber Ale – The Duck-Rabbit Amber Ale is a medium bodied beer with a lovely tawny copper / bronze color. The lightest of all our dark ales, this is a great introduction to full flavored beers. This brew emphasizes malt complexity with layered caramel malt flavors. We put a lot of effort into getting The Duck-Rabbit Amber Ale just right and we’re extremely proud of the result. Enjoy!

Lost RhinoRhiNoel (Belgian Dubbel)  – Brewed according to the Belgian tradition of Abbey beers. Rich maltiness blends perfectly with the spice notes produced by our Belgian Trappist yeast. Sit back, relax, warm your feet at the hearth fire and ponder about the contents of your stocking while sipping on our winter seasonal.

Dogfish HeadMidas Touch (Spiced Ale) – This sweet yet dry beer is made with ingredients found in 2,700-year-old drinking vessels from the tomb of King Midas. Somewhere between beer, wine and mead, Midas will please the chardonnay and beer drinker alike. For years, Dogfish Head has worked with biomolecular archaeologist Dr. Patrick McGovern to bring Ancient Ales to life.

Sierra NevadaOtra Vez (Gose) – On our search for the perfect warm weather beer, we wanted something light bodied and thirst quenching, yet filled with complex and interesting flavors. We stumbled across the fruit of the prickly pear cactus, native to California. This tangy fruit is a great complement to the tart and refreshing traditional gose style beer. Otra Vez combines prickly pear cactus with a hint of grapefruit for a refreshing beer that will have you calling for round after round. Otra Vez!

Brasserie Guillaum Ambree: Ambree (Amber) – (No official description since it’s from a tiny French brewery.)
